Is it important for people to have privacy? Why or why not? What purpose does privacy and quiet time serve? What happens to people if they are deprived of privacy and quiet?

Privacy is something we all need in order to be mentally sane. It has a major influence on people and their atitudes. My mother for example. She needs to get away alone in order to stay calm when she is with my family. The people in 1984 need privacy to have sex but do not get any. They are always being watched! Gross to think about it, but it's true. Privacy is where a person might find his/her sanctuary or peaceful place.
I agree with you Cody. I think that is why Winston's ex-wife had touble when they were trying. (ew!) Anyways, if they would have had some alone time. Sometime to thierself they might have had a child or two.. Maybe, mostlikely not.
I think having some privacy is needed. Like I do not agree with in 1984 and how they are always being watch with every move they make. We as humans need some privacy and alone time to think about our lives. How can we do that if someone is watching us 24/7. If someone does not have any privacy they might go crazy. I know I would. Sometime I just need time to be alone when I'm upset or angry or just want to be alone. So privacy is needed at some point in someone's life.
So you both agree with me. But why do the Inner Party people need to make the regular Party afraid that they're watching them. Now they know they are being watched. Now the people will think before they say or do. They need to find out who is on their side without using fear. The once the common person's feeling are discovered, they can use their weakness against them as torture or something else.
Wow, we are the only ones going to receive credit for doing these blogs. Or maybe Mrs. Striby will just give us extra credit which I so desperately need. Either way it's looking good for me.
So, I still can't agree with anybody since the only people that blogged are agreeing with me, so I re-agree with Bernadette, who is my bestie.
Privacy is something that we all need. If you don't have any privacy then you don't have anytime to think or do something that you like to do. I would go insane if a telescreen was watching my every move or listening to every word i say. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have privacy.
Privacy is one of the most important things in my life. I mean if I didn't have privacy I most likely would go insane. In 1984, they are always watched and never have time to themselves. Would drive me crazy, but in truth they all have some privacy. What I mean by that is the fact that no one can really hear anyone’s thoughts. The Inner Party makes it seem as if they can read people thoughts but they can’t. So thought crimes don’t really exist. They would have to tell the Party their thought to really be committing a thought crime. Because I could be think something really mean about someone but as long as I don’t say anything out loud. Know one know what I am think about. (Not that I ever think anything bad about anyone. =])
Well I don't agree with Kaitlin when she says that privacy is the most important thing. Yes it is important in our everyday life and we all need it. I don't think it's necessary in 1984 for everyone to be watched at home and work, especially at home. Work is different because you might want to keep an eye on your employees to make sure they are doing their job. But once you get home you should have your own privacy. I know people say well what if someone was planning and evil plot to hurt someone in their house, then it is necessary to be watched. But what you do in your house is your own private activity.
I think that privacy is important because without it you have no time just for yourself. Privacy gives you time to just sit back and think about certain stuff. In 1984, people are always being watched and the Party knows that if they have privacy and they are smart enough, they could figure out a way to over throw us. When people don't have privacy it is like they aren't even human. Without quiet time or privacy they are just following what everyone else is doing, like robots.
People naturally are self conscience of what people think about them. This being said when one person is constantly being wacthed there is no room for them to say or do anyting with out being individually scrutinized like in 1984. Because if someone is wacthing you doing something all the time waiting for you to do something wrong are you really going to take any risks, or would you play it safe.
Privacy is an extremly important thing. Privacy serves as a time for one person to seclude themself from other people. A synonym of privacy is secrecy and in Oceania, thats what the Party tries to prevent. because when someone has privacy then that usualy means they can think about how to act against Big Brother. And again in the book Anthem, they are forced to live w/ dozens of other people so they did not hav privacy either. Equality sets a good example as well because when he finds the underground tunnel he finds privacy and does exactly what they do not want people to do (work and think alone).
I agree with Bernadette when she says privacy isn't the most important thing we can have. I think relations with other people and family are more important. Winston's famlily was taken from him and it has scarred him. Obviously you need privacy but it's not the worst thing. Imagine how traumatic it would be to lose your mother and sister. How terrible that would be?
Bernadette, nosotros necesitamos encontrar una área donde nosotros podemos hablar sin los estudiantes escuchan. Intiendes? Quiero hablar contigo aquí.
Yes, I agree with Cody. Like I can't imagine losing my mother or father. Like when I lost my cousin I just wanted to go to my room and curl up in a ball and cry. But even though I had my family there to help support me and there to get me through it, I still needed some privacy to think about it. So privacy is important in everyone's lives and we all need it no matter what.
Cody, I have no idea what you are saying to me in spanish.
I think privacy is very important. We need privacy to think for ourself and to build our character. If people are deprived of privacy and quiet, they think like everyone else. The aren't an individual.
I agree with taylor. If you have privacy than you can make plans to go against the party. Also, when their being watched and they look suspicious than they can be questioned and even tortured.
I will be the first to admit i need privacy. I cant imagine beign watched 24/7. Well you know, think i am being watched 24/7. I would not even want to get undressed! I probably not even want to take a shower. I would pull one of those shirt trick thingys. You know, when you like put a clean shirt over the dirty one and change them without showing anything...yeah its a good trick. :) but anyways. To a modest person, I think privacy is very important. Even to an immodest person, privacy plays a role in a persons behavior. People act different when they are in private than when they know or think someone is watching. Like me for instance, when I am alone I blast CHER and sing and dance, and when I am in public....well, thats not a good example because I will do that anywhere. Hmmmmm....Maybe someone who likes singing but is not a confident singer will only sing when they are alone. That time might be important to them. Idk...trying to give an example. ONE DOWN TWO TO GO!!!!
I agree fully with Katie. If a person never has privacy, they will tend to think, act, and work like everyone else. No individuality, whatsoever. It can also keep a person from discovering who they really are. Maybe someone is a top-notch bubble blower, but never got the time or chance to sit down with a bottle of bubbles. That would be a talent they would never know they have! WHat a Shame! BTW- I am a really good banana bread maker- SEE, I would never have known that if i wouldnt have had time for myself to make it! WOOOWOOO! CHUGGING ON TO #3!
I think that it is very important for people to have their privacy. Privacy is an important time in which you can express yourself without feeling judged or paranoid. For example, in the book Winston is a much happier person when he and Julia have their own secret place. They feel free from the party and from their worries once they have a private place. If people are deprived of privacy then I believe all of their emotions would stay bottled up inside them, which would drive them insane.
I didn't mean to say that privacy is one of the most important things. Its def. important, but I agree with Cody and Ajamie. Privacy is not always necessary when at work. As Ajamie said you might want to keep an eye on your employees. It is a good thing to know who is working and who isn't. But I don't think people should be watched in there homes. That should be a place of relaxation and quality time with your family. Not a stressful and overwhelming, because you never know when they are watching.
Privacy today is very...real. You have very different views of it but, me i think you should allow to have it. Personal information should be private, but on the other hand i think if your planning to overthrow somebody yeah it should be sneaked into. In Winston case if somebody is watching you do all of your personal things and information, you better not hope they release it or it might cause prblems.
I agree with b.ajamie that people need people to comfort them when they lose someone who was close to them but you also need your privacy to think about it too. I just think that privacy is a very important thing all around because you need time to think things over without someone else there with you. I think its the most important things that human has. I would problably go crazy if i didnt have my own privacy.
I have to agree with you completely Bernadette. I needed somebody to console me when my grandpa died a few weeks ago. It was tragic to the family. But I liked to be alone because I could think alone without disturbances. It is needed.(privacy)
Tengo un celular. Quieres mi numero? Necesitas practicar tu español un poco. Quieres te ayudo?
So I think we all agree with each other when we say that privacy is important. I don't know how people in 18984 can stand knowing they are being watched for their every move. I know I hate the feeling of being watched. Sometimes I feel like someone is watching me through my window, but I know no one is there. That's why privacy is so important so we can feel comfortable in life and not feel that someone is always watching us.
Yeah, Bernadette, I know what you're implying. No I don't watch you. Jerk. Just kidding. I get that same feeling every once in a while. Like when I am sleeping in bed and my window has some dark figure moves across it. Shivers go up my spine. It's like some movie like Jeepers "Creepers" or something!
Bernadette, I agree I know that I don't like being alone but I don't know how the people of 1984 (18984?) do it. The fact that they are never truly had anytime alone or at least that is what they think. Would def. creep me out. And I know how you feel about the whole "person standing outside your window". I close all my blinds. And I know no ones standing out there because my rooms on the top floor.
I beleive that privacy is very important to a point. Some people also need more privacy then other people. I also agree with Khon that privacy isnt really much needed at work because they do need to watch you to a point to make sure that you are doing your job. But when you get home its a totally diffrent thing then being at work. I think everyone would go crazy if they didnt have there own time to think and just have time to calm down.
Cody, I know exactly what you are talking about! Like when i am at home at night and i am watching tv or reading or something and I look out of the corner of my eye and think someone is outside my window! OOOOH! I hate that! But anyways... First of all, Does anyone have a different opinion about the importance of privacy because this blog is a little redundent (sp?) :)I dont think we need like total seclusion, just time to ourselves. A person needs to have companions and other people surrounding them at times, and other times, ALONE TIME!
(I feel like I keep reading the same comment put into different words thirty times in a row!) 3/3! can I get a woop woop? (WOOP WOOP)
Everyone needs a peice of themselves that no one knows about. Some poeple feel very violated when they dont get there privacy. I agree with Bwill that when your in your room watching tv and you think someones watching you i think that makes me think that i really dont have privacy.... Privacy is just like a secret and if someone else knows about the secret then you feel violated and you dont feel like you have something to yourself. And Bwill heres your WOOPP WOPPP :)
i agree with THE Cody Smith because when i lost my grandmother a few years back I didn't like being around my family the whole time. I wanted privacy to think about what happened and pray that she was in heaven. I wanted time alone to think about what happend and remember all the good times we had together. Without privacy I wouldn't have been able to do the things I did.
Everyone needs privacy because you don't want your mom and dad asking you personal quesions all the time. At least I don't. Sometimes you don't want your mom and dad watching your every move because you want to do the things you want to do. If you have a boyfriend or girlfriend you don't want your mom and dad buting in on your conversations, you want privacy. I like my own personal space.
I agree with Katie. In 1984, the Party doesn't want them to have privacy so they don't make plans to go against the Party. Then if they are caught trying to overthrow the Party they most likely would get killed or tortured. The way the people are living in Oceania is horrible, they have no freedom even they Party tells them they have a choice whether or not to do something. Instead the people have to use their better judgment because they are being watched 24/7. For instance, if they are caught for missing too many Two Minutes Hate, then people are going to get suspicious and probably blamed for thoughtcrime.
We all need privacy. 1984 is like the movie, The Truman Show starring Jim Carey. His entire life is a soap opera that the whole world is watching except he doesn't know it. Winston is like Truman because neither have any privacy and Winston doesn't always know when he is being watched.
Yes i believe that privacy is a very important thing people need alone time to just relax. If they never have any quiet time they could be unable to think clearly. Privacy allows for planning of all kinds of things such as AA meeting or even terrorist plots against the USA. Good or bad it is a right to freely come together and talk, well it is a right in the US at least. Most likely not in this book.
I dis agree with Katie because in the movie the boy had no idea that he was being watched. These people know they are being watched and change their behavior because of it. Truman doesn't do anything different if he thinks nobody is watching. So, i don't think that it is a good comparison.
Privacy is not a necessity. It is important to have and should always be considered a privilege. But a person does not necessarily NEED privacy to survive. Granted that some people might go insane from paranoia from not having it but only because they had always have had it, and do not no life without privacy. 1984 is the perfect example, the majority of people don’t go insane because being watched has always been, it is normal for them.
I Agree with Riley in saying that people should not always be allowed to have meeting in case they are plotting against the party. Even if they are a person that has caused trouble they should probably be watched more carefully then the rest of the population.
I also agree with Jamie in saying that people should be watched at work in case they do try to take something from the office. but they should not all be watched at home because what people do is no one else's business but there own.
Quill thanks for reminding me about the blogs!
Well Ok i agree with Cody and Jamie in saying that if i lost a loved one i would most definitely need alone time. So since they have a lot of bombing they probably have a lot of fatality and that means that family members die daily. The victims probably want to be alone but they can't because of the TELESCREEN that would drive me crazy. I would probably never recover from that. That might be why half the people are blind to the fact that they are treated so unfairly that it is not even funny.
GOOD NIGHT Quill
Patrick is absolutely right; everyone acts different around other people. Humans as a species are extremely social. We need to have contact with others; we have developed the need to be wanted (to a certain extent). In order to be accepted we will go to great lengths to gain it, including act other than normal. You would not act the same way around your mother, the same why you act around your friends. Meaning the same thing you would not commit thoughtcrime consciously in you knew you were being watched. If you were not being watched then you would do what ever you wanted.
I NEED PRIVACY TO THINK THINK THINK!
You don’t NEED privacy to think (unless you think out loud or physically). That is the best thing about thought, it is completely private. No one can know what you are thinking unless you give clues verbally or physically. If giving clues is a problem then adapt. That is why the human species is the dominate species. We have the ability to evolve mentally! Evolution is the slow process of developing physical features to adapt to the environment. Some were along the line our brains evolve to the point were we just have to evolve or adapt mentally, which is a trillion times faster than developing physically features. My point is people will learn how to conceal their emotions and thoughts. Lying, for example people will tell lies to hide their true thoughts. I myself am very good at paying attention to a roomful of people talking about one thing and at the same time contemplate a completely different subject. You don’t NEED privacy to think.
we all need privacy in order to be normal a little bit in life. We need privacy in order to do things without being influenced with others opinions.
I think that everyone needs some alone time in order to function properly. :p Alot of people use their alone time to figure out things about themselves.
I agree with Anthony Joseph because I would go insane with my parents asking me personal questions all the time and being all up in my business so kudos to Anthony!
I agree with Simpson...i think. all up in your business haha. parents are annoying sometimes and never give you your privacy. thats why kids are so excited to get their liscense!!
I second the opinion of my dear classmate cody Smity because of the fact of the people in 1984 you need privacy to have sexual intercourse. also if you didn't have privacy for that then it would be really awkward and nobody would want to "do it" anymore!
In 1984 nobody has any privacy, which as you can see they are all being tricked into believing that there is a Brotherhood and are agreeing with all the laws. People are watching you through the telescreen while you are having sex...how creepy!
I also agree with Katie because privacy does build character. If you wouldn't build character and that would make everyone like everybody else which is what the people in 1984 want to make happen!
It is very crucial for a person to have their own privacy. It is important because a person needs time to be by themselves. It can be time to just relax and let go of everything, it can be time to think about an important descision, or even to just be alone when you don’t want to be around people. If people are deprived of their privacy they start acting weird and not normal. It can make them short tempered and a fight could break out. For examle, if a person needed time to think about something and you kept bothering them, they would start getting fustrated. Since they are fustrated, they probably wouldn’t be the nicest person. In result, an argument or fight could break out.
I agree with tyler in some ways, but disagree in others. Yes you can think in a room full of people about a completely different subject, but the problem is that your concentration is divided. this causes you to not give all of the attention to the important manners in your thoughts. However, if you are in privacy, then you are able to clear your mind and concentrate on your problems. For example, when you try to finish homework for one class in another class, it is very hard to divide your concentration.
Privacy is important. I agree with Alex Simpson. We all need our privacy to make descisions based on our own opinion and not others. If a person wanted you to give them advice and help them with what their going through, they would ask. All humans are different and have different feelings about certain things. They need to make the descision that would make them happy, not their friend or the person who gave them advice.
I also agree with Alex and Katie about privacy building character. Privacy is a timeor place where people can think and make descisions on what makes them happy, not others. By doing this, they are different than any other person. Everyone likes something different, and a person needs the courage to think about something by itself and answer it comfortably. Like Alex said, in 1984, this is not what the society wants. They want everyone to think the same and have no character. When doing this, no one will revolt. This is why it is very important for a person to have their privacy.
When one person does not have privacy they start to have doubts about their government. The patriot act made it so that the gov. could pretty much spy on people. This made americans angry and hurt. Why would there gov. not give them thier rights?
I agree with Alex as he said people need their own time and place to think about things and "vent" on various issues without the danger of being prosecuted becuase what they said.
Whoa! There are a lot of comments now! I agree with Seth Harmon on this one people. No privacy, no trust. No trust, no power. No power, no govt.
I agree with Alex Ritchie when he says that we need our privacy, we need our privacy so we can be an individual.
When we filled out those papers before we started reading 1984 it asked us if we agreed or disagreed with different scenerios. Well i do not agree with the one statement that asked if you were ok with being watched all the time. if your watched all the time then you just have a weird feeling.
I know that i said i disagree with being watched all the time but if you look at it. We are all Chistians, sorry if your not, but we believe that God is always there which means that God is always watching. Creepy once you look at it i know. So God is sorta like Big Brother in the since that he is always watching
I don't agree with Quill because when you think some people tend to make facial expressions that leave hints, about what you are thinking. There are times when I need privacy to think because I cant hear what i think, or that is what it feels like. In 1984, they need privacy to think because if the make any suspicious facial expressions they get caught for facecrime.
I think privacy is very important and practically essential for any human. privacy allows time for you to be to yourself. It helps to keep you from going insane or becoming someone you are not. people deprived of privacy may often times lose themselves in the spin of life. they wont have an outlet to spill their emotions and thoughts into. it will drive them to insanity
I also agree with katie. privacy does help build character. it allows you to shape opinions and ideas. for example, in Anthem, Equality began to change when he was allowed his privacy. He began to see the world through different eyes.
i agree with Cody as well. Privacy is a basic human need. Without it, we could very well go insane. Privacy is an outlet that allows us to release stress and harmful emotions. Also, without privacy, not only will we be hurting our own mental state, but also our physical state.
